Manchester United recently held the record for the most number of FA cup wins before they were surpassed by Arsenal.
The club has been on a barren run as far as this title is concerned. The club’s last success in the competition was back in the 2003-04 season. Even the great Sir Alex Ferguson was unable to prevent clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal enjoying a good run in this title. Now, though, manager Louis Van Gaal has set his sights upon making the club successful in this competition once again. Winning the title would bring United level with Arsenal (12) in terms of the number of FA Cup titles.
This would also endear Van Gaal to the supporters. So far, the Dutchman has not been a favourite among the fans for any reason. His football style has met with widespread disapproval, while he has also not be able to get consistent results to get the criticism off his back. Despite doubts about his ability to see out his contract at the club, Van Gaal says that he wants to win his first honour at United by claiming this title from the clutches of Arsenal, who have won this title in back-to-back seasons.
United are up against Shrewsbury Town in the fifth round of the competition. “That’s a personal wish. I have won the UEFA Cup already; that’s the only argument. I want to win a title in England and United have had a lot of time not winning the FA Cup.For United as a club, it’s more important to win the Europa League because you can qualify for the Champions League. It is difficult to win [though] because there are other difficult teams. There’s still the last 32 teams so there are a lot of rounds still,” said Van Gaal.
